Industrial Designer of the Year
New Format has been selected as Industrial Designer of the Year by Western Living Magazine. We are honoured to be recognized among the great range of talent on Canada's west coast. The Industrial Design award celebrates the studio's body of work and overall approach to our practice. From signature furniture to custom commissions, we combine industrial craft with thoughtful design to bring a touch of magic to all kinds of interiors.
Design 25 Winner
We are proud to be among the winners of the inaugural Western Living Design 25 competition. The awards honour some of the best Canadian designers across many mediums. Our winning design is the Borrowed Forms Credenza, a special piece which is the result of dozens of trips to forage for suitable stone formations in the Pacific Northwest. Rocks are selected for form and texture, and their impressions are captured in poured jeweler's wax. These are quilted together to form a tapestry of textures, before being lost wax cast in solid bronze to form the fronts of the credenza.
Le Rock, NYC
We are so pleased to announce a very special project at Rockefeller Center, NY. New Format collaborated with the design firm Workstead to develop the central pieces and finishes for Le Rock restaurant, taking influence from the grand Art Deco architecture of its setting to the egalitarian environment of the humble French brasserie. At the heart of the space is perhaps the world's only cast-bronze bar, hand crafted by New Format Studio.
Connect Filing Cabinet
Introducing: the Connect Filing Cabinet. This piece was created to be equally elegant and functional in an office setting. True to the Connect design philosophy, the fabrication process that marries traditional joinery techniques and mass manufacturing technology is evident in the visible construction and fasting details. It is shown here in Marbled Blackened Steel with Black Walnut drawers.
Small Victory Brentwood
The elegant new Small Victory cafe space designed by &Daughters was featured in the design section of the Vancouver Sun. New Format created a special finish for the custom bronze interior elements using spent coffee grounds saved from their other locations, reflecting the cafe’s own makings as part of the architecture.
Plano Wall Mirror
We are pleased to present a new addition to the Plano collection: the Plano Wall Mirror. The low-iron mirror is surrounded by hand-carved aged bronze that is formed by feel, and finished with a patina that highlights with the unique nine-sided geometry of the frame. Custom sizing is welcome.
Cirrus Coffee Table
Introducing: the Cirrus Coffee Table. Shown in Silver Nitrate Bronze and Oxidized Maple, this piece juxtaposes structural solidity with lightness of form. Custom variations are available, including a variety of domestic hardwoods or marble for the tabletop.
Home of the Week, May 15 2021
NUVO profiled this sleek penthouse in Bjarke Ingels' Vancouver House as its "Home of the Week." The penthouse interior was designed by Leckie Studio and features a living space composed of rich walnut and steel finishes, a central glass terrarium with a living cedar, and beautiful stonework throughout. New Format Studio created custom blackened steel architectural elements and accents for the project, including a sculptural 2,000-pound shelving unit that floats effortlessly above the marble kitchen island.
Wish Dry Bar
The beautiful new Wish Dry Bar space, designed by Peter Wilds, was featured in the weekend edition of the Vancouver Sun. New Format created the custom archways and mirror frames in a hand-finished stippled brass. These brass details, alongside lighting by Matthew McCormick, are a connecting thread between the different spaces within the salon.
